The Community That Shaped OperaWorks™

OperaWorks™ was built and sustained by a network of artists, educators, and supporters whose work shaped the organization at every level, guided by the vision of founder and artistic director Ann Baltz. Faculty from opera, theatre, movement, body-work disciplines such as the Alexander Technique and Feldenkrais Method, psychology, and music brought their fields into close collaboration, creating the integrated artistic environment at the heart of the programs. Singers and teaching artists who participated in the residencies—ranging from emerging artists to established professionals—contributed not only to their own artistic development but also to the creative life of the organization, helping to shape productions, workshops, and the evolving curriculum through their collaborative work and artistic discovery.

Board members provided stewardship and continuity across changing phases of the organization, while institutional partners hosted programs and projects in diverse settings. Grants, donors, and community supporters made residencies, performances, and scholarships possible, expanding access to singers at varied stages of development. Through these combined efforts, OperaWorks™ functioned as a shared artistic endeavor carried forward by all who taught, learned, governed, and supported its work.

The lasting influence of OperaWorks™ can be seen most clearly in the work of its alumni.

The individuals who contributed to OperaWorks™ across its history are acknowledged throughout this site and in archival materials.

​

OperaWorks™ alumni are embedded throughout the arts community at every level of practice and leadership, with artists working across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. They include performers at the highest levels of the profession—among them Grammy Award winners and singers appearing with major international opera companies, as well as artists performing on Broadway, regional stages, in new works, concerts, and recordings.

Equally significant is the role alumni play in education. OperaWorks™ graduates teach at every level of singer development, from conservatories and universities to community programs and private studios, shaping artists at their earliest and most advanced stages.

Beyond performance and teaching, OperaWorks™ alumni serve as directors, coaches, authors, arts administrators, and organizational leaders, contributing to the creation, production, and support of vocal art in many forms.

​

Through this wide and sustained presence, OperaWorks™ remains woven into the daily life of the field and the ongoing cultivation of singers.

Faculty

OperaWorks™ faculty brought together artists and educators from across opera, theatre, movement, psychology, and music in a model of purposeful collaboration rarely found in artist training programs, where disciplines are often taught in isolation.

At OperaWorks™, instructors worked as an integrated team rather than as separate specialists, aligning their teaching so that musical, physical, dramatic, and psychological work continually informed one another. This shared approach allowed singers to experience their development as a coordinated artistic process rather than a series of disconnected skills.

Faculty included active performers, directors, conductors, coaches, and scholars working in major institutions and companies, as well as specialists in movement and performance psychology. Beyond OperaWorks™, they continue to carry this collaborative, cross-disciplinary way of working into their teaching and creative practice across the field, extending its influence on how singers are taught and supported.
